(It's Yuuuuuletiiiide!)
Dear Writer,
Thank you for offering to write a story in one of my tiny/obscure fandoms (or, in the case of Body, thank you for indulging me)! I'm writing this post to give you some guidance and inspiration, but don't feel obligated to read it or to follow its suggestions too closely, if you don't think you need to; optional details are optional!
First of all,
here's my Yuletide tag which will show you my previous Yuletide posts, in case you want more info than just what's in this letter.
If you're worried about hitting a trope I really dislike, don't worry too hard. Your best bet would be to avoid anything heavy on angst, character bashing, or hardcore violence. I don't have any concerns beyond that.
As for things I enjoy, I'm pretty easy to please. I like identity porn and casefic, pretty much any AU premise that isn't too dark and depressing, gen, het, femslash and dudeslash, polyamory, worldbuilding, crossovers and curtainfic, and weird conceptual fics that make the reader wonder where the hell the idea even came from. If you want to write mpreg or wingfic or Aliens Made Them Do It, you have my blessing. Did you see one of my fandoms on the Yuletide tagset and get a sudden plot bunny, but now you aren't sure if I'll like it? Go for it!
I'll put my specific requests and some info on the fandoms under a cut:
Delilah Dirk is an adventure comic by artist/writer Tony Cliff! There are actually two stories right now. The first story, Delilah Dirk and the Turkish Lieutenant, is a completed webcomic hosted on delilahdirk.com. The second story, which is shorter, is a traditional comic titled Delilah Dirk and the Seeds of Good Fortune and can be purchased through a link at the same site. Turkish Lieutenant is the primary source and I don't expect my writer to have read Seeds, so don't worry about that!
The Basics
Delilah Dirk is the daughter of an English politician and a Greek artist. She is an adventurer and professional thief.
Erdemoglu Selim is a lieutenant in the Turkish service who, it seems fairly obvious, would rather not be. He prefers mixing teas.
While on a mission to steal certain documents from Constantinople, Dirk accidentally gets Selim mixed up in her plot and they end up fleeing the city together. Through CONFLICT and ADVENTURE and INTROSPECTION, Dirk and Selim become close friends and travelling companions. What excitement will they get into next?
I love the action in this comic, and how thoroughly competent and badass Dirk is. I love the character development we get for Selim, who has his eyes opened to this absurd world that Dirk lives in and then can't seem to leave it behind. Also, Dirk has a freakin' flying boat. How? Did she buy it from someone? Did she MAKE it?
My Request
Characters: any! (Deliliah Dirk and/or Erdemoglu Selim)
Optional Details: The further adventures of Delilah Dirk and Mr. Selim! Delilah Dirk femslash! Mr. Selim being a badass on his own while Delilah is off performing a solo heist! (I basically see Delilah as the Doctor and Mr. Selim as her companion, fyi.) (Also, Delilah was clearly an original St. Trinian's girl.) (. . . Obviously I am open to crossovers.)
Body is a movie concept developed by the tumblr user bigbanshees gorgons. It's an adventure/romcom flick starring Daniel Henney as a bodyguard and Danny Pudi as his client, a kindergarten teacher who's been receiving death threats.
The Basics
The entire canon is a movie poster + character blurb
at this tumblr post.
This is evidence that the creator is totally cool with people writing fic for Body.
This is some fanart of Body that bigbanshees linked.
I just really like romcoms, okay. I would watch the hell out of this if it was a real movie! See, one thing I like about bigbanshees idea is how it follows the kind of tropey format one would expect from a blockbuster movie (hardbroiled bodyguard with an attitude problem gets a job that puts him out of his element in some way). I'm the first person to admit that I read sappy AUs in big fandoms specifically because I like tropey romance sometimes, okay. Bakery AUs! Coffeeshop AUs! But in the case of Body, it wouldn't even be an AU; it would be exactly like canon.
Which is not to say you can't pretend that Body is a real film and write fic about it as if it were (including AUs, your favourite fic trope, or a fake kinkmeme fill). Every fandom has a BDSM or a/b/o'verse fic, right? Or a Bookshop AU? Or that one really infamous kinkmeme fic that everyone's read? ;-)
My Request
Characters: any! (The Teacher and/or The Bodyguard)
Optional Details: Anything pre- post- or during the supposed time period of the movie. It can be a serious and dramatic thriller or a romantic comedy or a parody of either. Obviously I ship Teacher/Bodyguard.
Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated is the latest version of the Scooby Doo cartoon! It makes many clever references to the earlier incarnations of the show, and has an intriguing over-arching mystery that is what originally got me interested in watching the show. I can't tell where the mystery is going, especially since they keep making references to
Nibiru and I have no idea how that's going to fit. It's all very exciting! So far there's been one and a half seasons, and the show's on hiatus at the moment.
The Basics
I actually started watching this show after someone mentioned it in the Yuletide brainstorming post. I didn't anticipate enjoying it as much as I do, but the characters and their relationships quickly drew me in and damn if I don't need to know how the mystery turns out ASAP.
Fred, unexpectedly, was the reason I ended up wanting to request this fandom. While I'm pretty sure the writers intended his comments in season one to make him seem naive or even immature, all I could see was a guy who wanted take all of his friends out on a date and dreamed of setting up a home with them after high school. I have never before in my life read a non-canonically poly character as so, so poly.
(Don't let that manipulate you into writing poly if you can't do it. No, really.)
(But if you do write poly, other characters are allowed to play too.)
My Request
Characters: Velma, Daphne, Fred, Shaggy
Optional Details: My dream fic for this fandom is a Fred/Daphne/Velma/Shaggy polyamorous puppy pile (Fred ships himself/Mystery Incorporated). If that is way out of your comfort zone I can and will gladly accept gen shenanigans! (If you happen to have a case fic up your sleeve, feel free to use that instead.)
The Automatic Detective is a detective noir/pulp sci-fi pastiche written in 2008 by author A. Lee Martinez!
The Basics
Mack was a doomsday robot built by an evil scientist. He was supposed to wreak havoc, but because he has the Glitch he also has freewill and he decided that he didn't want to be a bad guy. Now he works as a cab driver to make ends meet while waiting for his citizenship to be approved.
Lucia Napier was a science and technology prodigy, and she still sort of is, except now she's all grown up. She's also really rich and has a taste for mechanical men.
When Mack's neighbours go missing and the cops don't seem to be able to help, Mack decides to take things into his own hands. Lucia's not supposed to be anything other than a source of information but she quickly becomes an integral player in the mystery at hand. What is that mystery? Waaay more than just a missing family.
I love the world that Martinez has created in Empire City, particularly how blase everyone is about all the weird science that permeates their lives. According to the book, there isn't anywhere else on the planet with sentient robots and gorillas as citizens, or a large mutant population, or the atmosphere of constant "progress" that Empire City embodies. That's a pretty awesome idea, isn't it, that there's this one pocket of Science Fiction in Real Life amongst the mundane real world?
My Request
Characters: any! (Lucia Napier, Mack Megaton)
Optional Details: I'm open to so much in the fandom. Worldbuilding would be amazing; Empire City is unique, right, so what does the rest of the world think of it? How about slice of life fic about one (any) of the characters in the book, or an OC? Another option is a casefic set post-book. Or something with Lucia/Mack (at whateeeever rating you want). Or you could completely surprise me!
