The
fannish5 topic for this week is "Five fandoms you wished you liked but just don't." I'm not sure exactly how I want to define this, but I thought I'd give it a go anyway.
1. Marvel comics
It's so biiiiig, and I can't be bothered to find the niches that I'd actually be interested in. And the canon is so extensive that someone like me, who is very much a casual comic reader, just isn't familiar with enough of it to really keep up. Hypothetically I'd like to get into Uncanny X-Men, and also Iron Man/Captain America seems like a cool 'ship, but meh. It's just not happening. I guess I'm the sort of fan that movie adaptation fandoms are made for.
2. The Sentinel
Dude, I don't know when this show was on the air, but it's fandom is apparently still going? At least somewhat, from what I gather from
crack_van. It would be fantastic to be a part of a fandom with such strong staying power and I am a little jealous, I can't lie. But am I jealous enough to search out old canon and learn enough about it to actually join? Not right now, I'm not.
3. Big Bang Theory
I really enjoy this show, watch all the episodes as they air, 'ship some of the characters . . . and have almost no interaction with the fandom. I have a vague notion that the main pairing in the fandom is Penny/Sheldon, which may be part of the reason why I've never gotten into it (I don't get that pairing at allllll, and also I like Sheldon as aromantic) but who knows? I expect there's some fun stuff in that fandom, considering the canon, but I'm just not into it.
4. Star Wars
I like all the films and I've been a fan since I saw the original trilogy as a tiny little thing. Hell, I remember the first time I saw A New Hope while visiting my dad's parents in PEI. But beyond the very general I've never been a part of the fandom. I'm not sure why.
5. Lord of the Rings
Or rather, I don't want to like it, but wish that I didn't care. It would be so much easier if I could just read the books/watch the movies and geek out like a normal person, read all the fic and whatever that's been kicking around for ages, have enjoyed all the excitement when the movies were first released, etc. It's a huge fandom in a genre I enjoy. You think I'd gobble it up. Nope. Instead, I have a silly grudge against not Tolkien, per se, but more the idea of him as held in literary circles. I wish it weren't so, but it's not something that's just going to go away.
