I went along with my brother yesterday when he went to Blockbuster, so I decided to pick up one of the many movies on my to-watch list. Seriously, this list just keeps getting longer, haha, and I haven't been watching a lot of movies this summer. Anyway, I rented
Creation, starring Paul Bettany as Charles Darwin.
This movie was quite sad, as it places a lot of focus on the death of Darwin's eldest daughter. I don't know how much is based on real life, but Darwin is just wrecked in this movie. It's very heavy on the emotional torment of the characters.
Also, related to the story of his daughter's death, there was mention of Darwin's belief in
hydrotherapy. He brings his daughter to a hydrotherapist before she dies, and he goes to one when he's ill. Somehow it just seems odd to see an icon like Darwin, who is so closely associated with scientific rationalism because evolution, put so much faith in something as iffy as hydrotherapy. Puts things in perspective, I guess.
Now onto the non-spoilery comments:
Quite by coincidence, Benedict Cumberbatch has a supporting role in Creation, and I only just saw him for the first time in the new BBC show
Sherlock. It's like one of those situations when you learn about something and suddenly it's EVERYWHERE.
Also, why didn't I hear about
Peacock until I saw the trailer for it on the Creation DVD? It doesn't exactly scream obscure, starring Cillian Murphy, Ellen Page, and Susan Sarandon, who are all big names to some degree. Maybe the story is just too "weird". I don't know, it looks interesting to me (and, if I can be purely shallow for a moment, Murphy looks better as a woman than I would have supposed. Ooh yeah).
