"It's just not fair, you know?" Roxy asks, bouncing the gurgling baby on her hip. I thought I'd be the one to be here for her. I have been here for her through you, through the whole getting Vamped thing . . . " She sighs heavily. "But I guess I just can't compare to being able to share the memories about Wolverine that those two have."

She turns and paces in the other direction, still holding Shogo close. "That's gotta be what they're bonding over, right? I mean, they say opposites attract, but they're more alike than they are different. 'Course Jubilee and I have a lot in common too. Or so I thought. Now here she is running off with X-23 and wanting me to not become an X-Man after all her stories of wanting to be with them so bad. You think she's understand."

Roxie sighs again, shakes her head, and turns once more, still pacing all the while. "Yeah, we're totally not that different. Flip sides of the same coin. What do you think they're doing, huh?" she asks, looking down at Shogo who laughs and claps his pudgy hands together. She snorts and rolls her eyes. "Yeah, and here I am, asking advice from a baby. Heh. I'd be better off going to the zoo with Lin."

She turns again. "Maybe I should go to the zoo with her. At least we might see some kind of action. She said the trees have been talking again. But I promised Jube I'd watch over you. I could take you with me, but then what kind of a friend would I be? And I'd totally lose any shot I had with her."

Roxy sighs again, her head hanging. "I wonder who you'd pick, little guy: the 'new Wolverine'," she questions, quirking her fingers in air quotes, "or me?" He laughs; she smirks. "Yeah. That's what I thought."

"You." The sudden answer comes so suddenly and unexpectedly that, at first, Roxy thinks her tired, frustrated mind is playing tricks on her. Then she begins to bristle, thinking it may be one of the countless telepaths in the school playing a cruel trick on her.

Her head snaps toward the door, her eyes narrowing, an acid remark right on the tip of her tongue, but the words die in her mouth before they can ever be spoken aloud. She swallows hard instead. "Jubilee!" Her spiky face darkens. "How much did you hear?"

"One," Jubilee says, prowling boldly into her own bedroom, "I wasn't trying to overhear anything, but Vampire hearing, ya know. It's like Wolvy used to say: ya get yer ears loaded with stuff, rather you want to hear it or not. And two, huh, well, pretty much everything."

Roxy stares at her, her mouth hanging slightly open but her tongue and mind unable to produce any coherent words.

"Two," Jubilee continues, walking toward her, "if you wanna be an X-Man, really wanna be one, I'm totally behind you, but you can't blame me for wanting to protect you. It's not an easy life."

"But you always say how -- "

"Yeah," she nods, "It can be pretty damn cool, but it's very dangerous too, and you have no idea of the amount of friends and loved ones I've lost because of the whole X thing. It's a hard life," she admits with a heavy sigh that stings Roxy's heart.

"You haven't lost everybody," she says quietly.

"No, not yet. An' that's exactly part of the reason why ya can't be mad at me for wanting to protect you. I don't have very many friends left who don't feel different about me rather it's because of me being a Vamp now or losing my powers or even 'cause Wolvy's dead, which is where Laura comes in. We understand each other on levels I can't share with anybody else, Roxy. We've both got a killer inside of us, just like Wolveroonie did, and we have to fight it every damn day. It helps to fight it together. We had a thing one Summer, yeah, but she's moved on. She's with Warren now. Not my Warren or, huh, the grown up Angel, I guess ya can say, but the one that time traveled back. I don't see it," she admits with a shrug, "but he makes her happy, and I'm happy for them. And besides, there's somebody else helping to make me happy these days."

Roxy glances to the baby in her arms. "Shogo?" she asks.

"Heh." Jubilee snorts and smirks. "Yeah. Shogo. And the hot chick holding him. This probably goes against all of Kitty's rules," she concludes, reaching her new best friend, "but what the Hell? We've always been rule breakers." She wraps a hand around the back of Roxy's neck, stilling her with surprise, and covers her open mouth with her own. Her tongue slips smoothly inside, and she kisses long and deep before finally letting up. Her forehead till pressing against hers, she grins and whispers against her mouth, "You should've told me. We could've saved a lot of time."

Roxy's blushing again, but if Jubilee didn't know her so well, she wouldn't know it. "Yeah?"

"Totally." Jubilee's grin broadens.

"Kiss me again?"

"Definitely."

But before Jubilee can make good on her word, Roxy's mind starts whirling with more questions. She places a finger on Jubilee's lips just before she can kiss her again. "Does this change anything?"

"Only if you want it to," Jubilee assures her.

Roxy smirks. "I dunno," she answers truthfully, "but wherever this leads, it's gonna be cool."

"You're damn right," Jubilee agrees, sounding much like her adopted father and kisses her again with every bit as much passion as the old Wolverine ever had with any of his myriad lovers. Things were changing. She'd already miss Logan, and Laura would always hold a special spot in her heart, but right now being with Roxy is right where she wants to be. She tightens her hold, though still gentle, on the back of her neck, and kisses her long and deep, not even surprised when Roxy's tongue touches her fangs but touched. No one's ever completed her or cared for her like this girl does, and she knows she's lucky to have her friendship and love. Flip sides of the same coin, Roxy had said. Yeah, they are, Jubie thinks, not letting up as she leads Roxy to Shogo's crib so they can deposit the little guy there and keep on to her bed, but the same coin nonetheless, and it's totally made of gold!

The End
