Effy likes to say that things don't always work out the way you'd planned. She especially likes to say it when Katie's complaining about something gone wrong, like when she lost her shoe in a movie theater and had to walk home with one heel in the rain.
Anyway, it's one of those stupid vague things Effy likes to remark on at random like she's a fucking philosopher or whatever. Katie will be mumbling or screeching about this or that and Effy will just say, "Things don't always work out how you plan," and Katie will shoot her a glare or give some weak comeback like, "I bet your mum didn't plan for you to be born."
One day Katie suddenly asks, "How the fuck did we end up together, anyways?" Effy looks over, raises an eyebrow and says, "Things don't always work out how you planned." Katie rolls her eyes; Effy mock-solemnly warns that they'll get stuck like that and she's so obviously saying it just to be obnoxious that Katie does it again, more dramatically this time because if Effy's going to be childish than so will she, damnit, and it escalates into a who-can-be-more-subtly-annoying contest that Effy wins because Katie's way more irritable and way less subtle than she is.
Later, Effy continues, "And what fun would it be if they did?"
