Cybil isn’t the type to give up, never has been, but this is so overwhelming she might be tempted, if it were only herself she had to worry about.
But Rose is here, the searching mother, the mother bereft. And though Rose is one of the strongest people she has ever met, she needs protection. If Rose’s reason is finding Sharon, Cybil’s reason has become to guide and save Rose.
Cybil remembers the creature with the knife, the one that could almost ignore a bullet to the arm. And she pictures him coming back, cornering them again in this place of rust and horror. Could she stop his knife this time? If she stood side by side with Rose, could she fight that faceless thing? Maybe what is in this town is on a whole different level, is too big to destroy. Maybe there was no hope from the very beginning.
She pictures it, the helmet looming over them, the knife sweeping down, Rose lifting her empty hands as if she could push it away. And Cybil knows she will do what she has to do, will shoot, hit, claw, and stand against this whole town. If Rose falters, Cybil will be there to help her walk, and if she falls Cybil’s arms will be her place. Perhaps they both are lost, and perhaps there is no way out, but there is still a reason to keep going. Rose will be her purpose now.
