Tenjou Utena knows her name and not much else. She remembers very little before her tiny apartment and her job at the hardware store.
Sometimes when she can't sleep, she tries to fit together the pieces of her past. She has a ring, a scar on her abdomen, and a vague memory of a dark, beautiful woman with a sweet voice and an enigmatic smile. Utena dreams of that woman more often than not. She's so tantalizingly close, yet always just out of reach. Utena awakes filled with a sick sense of failure. She was supposed to protect this women, she knows, but she couldn't.
Her friends tell her not to dwell on the past. "Think of this as your new beginning," they say. Utena shakes her head and says nothing.
It's a day like any other. Utena is arranging a display when she sees a young woman with searching expression on her face. Then she meets the woman's eyes. "Himemiya." Her voice is barely more than a whisper.
"Utena." Anthy's eyes widen disbelievingly.
Utena grasps Anthy's hands and pulls her close. Tears roll down her face as she repeats Himemiya's name over and over.
She's found her new beginning.
