The Train to Kansas City
Dorothy and Ozma took the train to Kansas City.
Dorothy might have transported them there instantly using the Nome King’s belt or some fantastic creature of Ozma’s acquaintance might have flown them their but they preferred to ride the train, ordinary girls on an extraordinary journey. The regal Queen of Oz and her beloved Princess dressed in simple calico shirtwaists, watching the telegraph poles flash by outside the windows.
At each stop the porter called the name of the town and Dorothy squeezed Ozma’s hand because they were one step closer to their destination and whispered to her eagerly of the modest delights the city held-the motor cars, the ice cream parlor, the exotic bazaar with its products from faraway lands, the ragtime band playing in the park.
Such things might have seemed poor and dull to the ruler of an enchanted kingdom but Ozma knew that wonder and anticipation had a magic all its own and shared her friends enthusiasm as stop by stop they neared the city.
