I remember yr bloody trail to the top, the top
Took it all too far now you just can’t stop, don’t stop
I’ll help collect yr soul from the lost and found, it’s around
And I will build you up while they put you down

Schizo-action baby create a scene
I’m the type-a-guy to boost yr self-esteem
We party all night cuz it’s you, you, you everyday
Self-obsessed and sexxee all the way, all the way

Party Every Night

They’re Pretty now, Shay and Tally. No more kids stuff, sneaking around, living rough in places like the Smoke or the Grime or the Soot or whatever that place was called. No more ugliness, no more Ugly thoughts. They’re Pretty, inside and out. Every night is another party, champagne, hot air balloons, beautiful clothes, and beautiful faces. They’re Pretty together, just like Tally always wanted.

So why, Shay wonders, isn’t Tally happy? Why is she always someplace else, an Ugly place she’s creating in her head?

When she cut herself, Shay could think Ugly thoughts too, disrupt the endless party in her head and remember.

She remembered that Tally was the one who wanted to be Pretty. Shay was always against it. She’d wanted to stay like herself instead of becoming like everybody else. All the Pretty people had seemed vapid, boring but she had thrilled at going beyond boundaries, breaking rule. She’d left Tally behind and gone to the Smoke so she could be free.

Tally had caught up with her. Now she was trying to catch up with Tally.

But why? Why was she hurting herself, deliberately making herself angry and unhappy? Why couldn’t she spend the night making the rounds of the parties, drinking and dancing and enjoying everything that came with youth and beauty?

Shay’s head isn’t clear, she can’t be sure if she wants revenge for all of Tally’s betrayals, or if she just wants to out do Tally or if she just wants them to be together, happy, like lovers. She only knows that none of it matters without Tally.
