Penny preferred to believe in things that made sense, and what she'd been told simply didn't. Oh, there was something sharp about Diana's smile, and she'd always had several peculiarly pale teammates, but a vampire? Diana had brought garlic breath into the huddle too many times for Penny to believe that one.
So when she found Diana and Ann in the locker room, Ann's arms loosely wrapped around Diana's waist, Diana's mouth against Ann's throat, Penny naturally jumped to the other sensible conclusion and silently applauded the rookie for having the stones to go get what she'd so clearly wanted.
Diana didn't tend to think too deeply about her nature. When she was hungry, she fed; it was just like grabbing a bag of chips when her stomach growled, even if others might disagree.
Ann's multi-faceted love had been good for her. That was gonna be hard to replace.
Drained, she looked over her teammates to see who she might be able to feed from. Schuey was close, but… no. Kelly Mil's emotions ran high, but Diana could watch chick flicks if she wanted to cry.
Love and admiration repressed by fear … oh, Mazz was going to be delicious.
Diana wanted to talk to her alone, so Kelly waited after practice for her. "What's going on?" she asked, because D looked wiped.
"Just sit down and relax."
Without thought, she did, but she started to tense when Diana shut the door and sat on her lap, legs straddling her waist. "D, what-"
"I said relax," Diana replied irritably, and then Kelly went blank.
When she came to, numb and dazed, Diana was gone. She had no idea what had happened… but for years afterwards, she would have dreams and nightmares about the kiss Diana left on her unresisting mouth.
Ann had become accustomed to her role in Diana's life. Since Diana had helped her through some… issues… she'd even come to enjoy it.
And after the… issues… were gone, there had been some great sex. That was a nice bonus.
She understood Diana's need to feed on emotions to keep herself strong. She'd learned to recognize others Diana had used, the early brittleness and the eventual relaxation. She knew better than to be jealous when she was out of Diana's reach.
But she felt a stab of something when she saw how Mazzante's emotional reactions were just a second late.
