A/N: Based on the ep. Prey (where Seven doesn’t listen to Janeway at all and Janeway isn’t very happy about it..) not so much Seven’s words as Seven’s indefinable thoughts…
“That will be all Seven,” she intoned.
And the inalterable finality of those five words caused sharp pain behind my eyes. The mouth that taught me so much was cursing me with the undercurrent of meaning behind that simple phrase.
It had not been the first time she had said those words, or the first time I had contradicted her confusion of compassion and diplomacy in favor of efficiency. It was also not the first time I had seen the warm brown of her eyes glossed in the Captain’s steely cold determination. But it was the first time I had heard that tone. And I felt her disappointment palpably skewer.
I felt wetness on my cheek as she left. I wanted to summon her back again, as if one word, ‘Kathryn,’ could make the Captain’s anger disappear. But she was not the Kathryn who absently trailed her fingers through my hair when we’re alone, or the Kathryn whose tender lips fill me with an odd mirror to perfection I have never been able to explain. That Kathryn had been crushed beneath the Captain’s responsibility and pride caught her name in my throat, unable to summon either back to my side.
