Sam and Mary had been fighting over their whales all week, which was just fine with Sam. She enjoyed fighting with Mary.
But now her whale was telling her to stop fighting with Sam. “It would be such a kindness,” he said, “if you made up with her.”
Sam didn’t care about kindness. But she cared about her whale, so she mentioned kissing and making up to Mary. She never thought Mary would actually kiss her.
Then they were looking at each other, moving closer to each other, and Mary’s hand was behind her head, pulling her into a kiss. And all Sam could think was that maybe kindness wasn’t as bad as she thought.
