“Miss Elphaba, really! Have you no shame?” Galinda pursed her lips as her roommate kicked off her shoes, then drew her knees up to her chest. “For heaven’s sake, Master Boq will be here soon!”
Elphaba pulled her skirt up, exposing her knees. “Boq, much as it mortifies me to admit, has seen far more than just my ankles. Besides, with you sitting there, I doubt he would notice even if I were to strip completely.”
Galinda emitted a low growl. Honestly, Elphaba would say such horrendous things!
“Miss Elphaba, you are being positively indecent. Anyone could pass by and see you.”
“Because the kitchen garden is quite the social hub,” Elphaba drawled. “I believe you and I are alone, Miss Galinda. Is it therefore you who has a problem with my skin? Am I more offensive than I imagine?”
“We are young ladies, Miss Elphaba, not children,” Galinda snapped. “I do not find you offensive in the slightest, save for your extreme lack of modesty - which I find more immature than anything else. I have no issue whatsoever with your skin.” Fuming, Galinda was surprised when Elphaba smiled.
“I do believe that’s the nicest thing you have ever said to me, Miss Galinda.”
Galinda couldn’t help it; somewhat charmed, she smiled back, then gave Elphaba’s discarded shoes a pointed look.
“Shoes?”
Elphaba raised an eyebrow, but at least lowered her skirt - and not a moment too soon.
“Well, my stars and garters, a visitor. Such a surprise...”
