Lies were easy. Ashley had learned to let them drip from her tongue like honey from comb, coating sharp edges of truth in sweetness: Yes, I love you. Yes, I’m yours. Yes, I want you. Lies came in handy sometimes.
Then her world shifted, monumentally. Equilibrium in the form of Spencer Carlin. Now, when the questions came, quietly husked in Ashley’s ear, kissed lightly, felt in every space between every cell in her body, the truth was as simple as a single breath. Because she asked. Yes, I love you, Spencer. Yes, I’m yours, Spencer. Yes, I want you. Spencer.
Telling the truth was simple. For Spencer, there was no need or desire to lie, never crossed her mind, really. Truth was something solid, steady, and she walked on it with ease.
Then the ground turned to sand and slipping, she found herself hiding things, tiny acts of omission, little white lies. Always in the service of not hurting others, she rationalized. One day, maybe soon, the truth was going to come flooding back out of Spencer, washing away her little deceits. It was inevitable, would probably be messy too. And it would sound a lot like I love her.
