Ariel can hear Scuttle in her head, coming up with all kinds of silly names for the instruments before her as she gingerly touches one and then another. She feels eyes on her and lifts her baby blues to see the beautiful women with whom she’s sitting paying very close attention to her as she debates which fork to use. She gulps hard. It’s like they’re just waiting for her to make a mistake!
A tiny mouse runs up her arm. Having grown up around far more animals than humans and a best friend who’s always been a fish, Ariel doesn’t shriek even when the rodent whispers urgently in her ear. “Cinderelly wanted Gus Gus to warn you,” he squeaks. “Pick fork carefully! Much more than et-et-etiq-etique -- “
“Etiquette?”
“Whatever fork you use means you you’ll be sleeping with tonight! And not just sleep, sleep zzz.” He cocks his little head to the side and makes snoring sounds as though he’s sleeping. “Other kind of sleep sleep!”
“Oh!” Ariel gasps, her face turning as bright red as her hair. She looks again at the forks. This time, she watches the other women’s gazes as she touches one fork and then another. There’s a silent, regal beauty at the table’s end who’s not watching her. When she picks up a fork and the other Princesses lose interest, Ariel smiles. The Indian Princess is just who she wanted! Being with these other women was going to be an adventure in and of itself!
