She catches the blade between her hands not because she has to to keep it from chopping off her head -- there are at least a dozen other ways she could pull it from her assailant’s hands -- but because she wants to. Her enemy’s eyes widen with shock as the sword’s sharp edges cut into Faith’s bare palms. Her blood flows. Faith doesn’t appear to notice as she snatches the sword from her foe’s grip, flips it around, and drives it through her middle.
She walks on even as the fresh corpse hits the ground behind her. She used to be able to think, One down. However many more to go, but now she knows better. She’ll always have countless enemies just as she’ll always have countless more opportunities to experience pain.
Yet none of them will ever hurt her worse than she’s already been hurt. Her heart bleeds more than her palms. Her eyes sting worse from keeping her tears at bay than any cut. She could be lying half dead -- they could kill her --, and none of it will ever hurt more than the pain she’s already endured, more than the pain of what sent her here.
Buffy. She’ll find her way back to her, but it won’t matter. B will never trust her. She’ll never love her. They will never be the most perfectly chosen pair the universe has ever known. They’ll never be what they should’ve been, and that hurts more than anything.
