She cocked her head to the side and bit her lip, staring at the crime scene photographs pinned to the whiteboard and the messy scrawl of her psychologist offsider. To the casual observer, it looked as though she were analysing it all, working up a profile of the man who'd been abducting girls at random this week in Bradfield.
She wasn't at all.
She was thinking back to that first meeting with Carol. The changing of command had meant a quick rundown of operations with her predecessor was in order. She'd picked her son up after school and he sat doing his homework on the kitchen floor while the women had talked in the afternoon light. She'd felt Carol's leg brush her own under the table, and had swallowed hard.
The next day as she dropped her son to school, her chest was throbbing with adrenaline. She'd knocked on Carol's door, dropping off files. Gritting her teeth, hoping. An hour later, she was clenched around the DCI's hand, riding an orgasm and clawing the sheets.
The former DCI was on the other side of the world now. For the forseeable future, Alex was stuck here, hiding her phone calls from the man she knew Carol was in love with.
