"You did this to me," she says, pushing her glasses back up onto her nose even though she'll never need them again. They, like the short skirt and orange sweater she's always worn, are so much a part of her life that, even now, she wears them.
"H-How?" Daphne whispers, shaking from head to foot.
Velma hovers above her. "I know you've never been that bright, Daphne, but you can stop pretending you don't know now. You always knew how I loved you -- "
"Velma!" Daphne shrieks, finding her voice.
Velma points at her. "Don't pretend you didn't know! I know you know! You always knew! I loved you, Daphne! I loved you for as long as I could, but I couldn't stand seeing you in Fred's arms any longer!"
"S-So you . . . you let the ghost . . . "
"Please, Daphne! We both know what happened! I couldn't stand the pain any longer!"
Daphne's face pales. "You did this to yourself?"
"NO!" Velma shrieks, flying up into the air and then diving at her former friend. "YOU DID THIS TO ME!" she wails.
Daphne turns. Her long legs take her quickly away from Velma in panic. She doesn't stop running until she's back with the rest of the gang, but even then she's shaking. "Daphne, what's wrong?!" Fred asks as she plows into his arms, but even as he wraps his arms securely around her, she knows. She knows she'll never feel safe inside his embrace again, not after all that Velma's ghost has told her.
