Ephalba dragged herself to the dorm room, her back rigidly straight despite the day she’d had. Other people’s words still hurt her. She never seemed to grow a thick enough skin.
She collapsed into the desk chair and tossed her book bag on the floor, shoulders drooping. What was the point, anyway? Why’d she keep on?
Her gaze wandered about the room and came to rest on a pink rose lying on her pillow. Her heart leapt. She picked it up and sniffed its intoxicating aroma.
Maybe it was a trick. She wouldn’t put it past them.
She heard the door open and she turned, the rose still in her hand.
“You found it!” Galinda said. “Do you like it? I know you’re not that big on pink.”
Ephalba’s pulse raced. “It’s from you?”
“Of course, silly. Who else?”
Ephalba looked down, embarrassed because it was true. But happiness pulled her gaze to Galinda’s. “Why?”
Galinda knelt at her feet and took her hands. “My, you’re dense. Because I love you, you idiot.” Galinda kissed her on the lips. For a moment nothing else existed but the soft, urgent press of their mouths together.
“I love you too,” Ephalba murmured.
