The wine served in this semi-underground tavern is smooth in texture, but thickens in Bridget's throat, seemingly harder to swallow, leaving a bitter taste in her mouth she didn't want to savor.
It was red wine of the domestic sort, but it tasted as if the grapes had already begun to shrivel, the finer, fatter ones no doubt used in wines sent to somewhere upscale.
The smoke drifting from everyone's cigarette, including her own, reminded Bridget of serpents, slithering through the air before quickly vanishing. She could only think of a similar fate waiting for the Nazis. Everyone wanted to believe they were more cunning than they actually were, blind to their own ignorance.
At the bar, Mathilda keeps one eye on a group of rowdy, drunken German soldiers. It would have been interesting to see her pull a gun on them, to see how quickly they would shut up.
