A/N: This is a follow-up to the previous Jane/Catherine drabble I posted - this is number two in that series of drabbles.
Summary: Jane has been tutoring Catherine Linton for six months. The tension between them is starting to stretch their tenuous friendship.

Occasionally, Catherine would dampen her temper, but rarely - so little, thought Jane, that it was a flash of a candle in a darkened room, no sooner lit than extinguished.

Six months had passed, filled with the young woman's red-cheeked railing and angry swishing of skirts. When her hunger to please this Mademoiselle enfant was new, she had never revealed how truly intimidated she was. She instinctively knew that showing weakness would pitch her deep into the low mires of Catherine's contempt.

Today, she meditated upon the causes of her mistress' quarrelsome nature, nimbly embroidering a kercheif for the manservant, Hareton. He had so little - she delighted in the thought of gifting it to him. Her fingers, and the room, were cold as marble and out of the corner of her eye she watched Catherine flit around the unlit hearth, a flush of wild pony-mane and dirty bustle.

"I've some feeling for why you vex me with your lessons and your dull presence, Jane," Catherine spat, today intent on poisoning her governess' mood. Her eyes danced and she pursed her mouth cruelly. "You're some Master's cast off, aren't you? A thrown aside poppet, no longer the favour of some grand hall."

Jane blushed and leant her head closer to the pimpernels she was sewing into life. She wounds me, as a wasp. Yet I offer my neck for the sting.

It did not occur to Jane to question why.
