Summary: It's a memory, but also a dream that doesn't stop.
The dream (no, the memory) flickers on and off, the short glimpse that precedes the darkness all fit together after the scattered pieces of the puzzle have been found.
She knows how it will end--
--the blinding lights--
--their gloved, antiseptic hands in her head--
--unable to blink--
--her fear is overwhelming, a nauseous tidal wave--
--but stronger than anything--
--can't think straight--
--but, isn't that what they all wanted from her?--
--she wished them all deaddeaddead--
--they are all monsters--
--her sense of self, identity ripped to shreds--
--her emotions disemboweled--
--monstersdeadmonsters--
--because she had seen this memory before. She is their (trapped) star.
Her screams are real this time, no longer in her head now--
--a hand touches her shoulder, shakes her--
--without thinking, no feeling, she reaches out to grab and seize it--
"No, don't! It's me, Kaylee! River--"
River sees the girl in the gloomy light of the room, the girl's face is partially covered by shadows.
In the dark, she can see the faint outline of the bare (no gloves) hand she's caught in her own.
"....Kaylee?"
"Yes, it's me. You're okay. I promise." She is near, nearer than before, her breath tickling River's cheek.
With no conscious thought on River's part, she pulls Kaylee closer, closer and into the small light. In her eyes she is unsurprised to see shock and concern. But mixed in with those two, is awe. She can see it, barely perceptible. It's something she can't (couldn't) comprehend. But, why?
