Melanie watches the argument through the club window. The boy’s pretty, with nice broad shoulders, but he’s got nothing on the girl.
Melanie watches the boy stalk away. Five minutes later, the girl gives up pretending to enjoy the music. Melanie’s waiting for her outside the club and, wow, she’s even better up close.
“Big fight?” The girl tenses at the question. But then her eyes are dragging down Melanie’s legs, and she nods slowly.
“I’m Melanie.”
“Dana,” is the reply, in a voice like honey.
They walk through Gotham together, and Dana is so easy to talk to. Easy to kiss too, sweet and warm, and she giggles, tucks Melanie’s hair behind her ear.
“Like to move fast, don’t you?” Dana grins.
“More like I live in the moment,” Melanie laughs and pulls Dana back in. Her lipgloss tastes like raspberries.
They arrange to meet the following night, midnight beneath the big clock.
But then there’s the heist and Batman.
Dana’s sitting there, soaked and miserable, when Melanie finally arrives far too late.
“I can’t do this,” Dana tells her in a small voice. “I can’t deal with another person who leaves me hanging.”
“Please,” Melanie says, but she already knows she never deserved a girl like Dana to begin with. What they had was just a fleeting glimpse of a life she’ll never have.
The next heist, she’s unfocused, distracted. Batman takes them all down.
Dana’s there as Melanie’s shoved into a police cruiser, watching with tired eyes.
