The stars were cold. Points of hard light in a dead universe.
Zoe looked out at them from the cockpit of Inara's shuttle. She rested her hand on her belly where she was starting to show and wondered what kind of go tsao de life her child would have. Death and despair was all that those stars promised.
She didn’t look when Inara joined her.
Zoe had thought about ending it, briefly. The thought had disgusted her. That was the last thing Wash would have wanted. He would have wanted his child to have a chance. Ultimately Zoe wanted that too. But she was scared. She was alone.
Inara put her hand on top of Zoe's. "Your child will be loved."
"I know that." Zoe said, a spark of anger in her tone that she immediately regretted. "Sorry."
"So will you."
They both stood for a while looking at the light from distant suns. Finally Zoe turned to Inara and looked her in the eyes. "Do you think we could...?"
Inara nodded. "Let's go back to bed." She gave Zoe a light kiss on the lips then turned back towards her room, shedding the red and black flower pattern kimono as she walked. Zoe followed the naked woman. Together they worked out the frustration and despair she felt.
