*waves at new people from the
serpentinelion friending meme*
Since it seems to be the cool thing to do at the moment to write up an introductory post and it's Sunday night and I'm procrastinating on getting things together for tomorrow morning, well... :D Most people who've been around here for a while know this stuff, but for those of you new to these parts, well, here's a bit about me?
I'm a graphic designer. When I am bored at work--which is frequently--I pester
noeon,
supergrover24 and
wemyss. As
wemyss frequently says, God help the biographers if they find those email threads.
noeon is my roommate, writing inspriation, and all-around awesome fount of awesomeness.
I was born during the Nixon administration. I think this officially makes me An Old. Unfortunately, I neither act my age, nor look like it, evidently, so yay?
I am obsessed with cricket, thanks to
wemyss who managed over the course of last year to suck
noeon and me into the intricacies of the sport. I root for England internationally and Middlesex countywise because a) they are the first cricket team I saw live last summer at Lord's and b) I am ridiculously fond of
Steve Finn.
Tottenham Hotspur own my heart. We will not discuss the Fulham match today because JFC, WTF boys. W.T. everloving F. /0\ Still, I <3 Peter Crouch.
I am completely enamoured with Parliament and British politics, and probably know far too much about it for someone who can't vote in the UK. D: Also, half my bathroom wall will soon be taken up with a four-foot-wide photo of Westminster Palace in the fog that I bought at Ikea this weekend to match my London shower curtain. Some might say it's the proper room for it.
I think David Cameron is hotter than Nick Clegg. I suspect this is because of my Death Eater fetish. (I love you, DCam! <3 <3) :D
Politically, I'm moderate-to-liberal. Most of Red State America would consider me a "socialist", but in the UK, I'd be in the middle of the LibDems, since I don't hate the Coalition. *g* I don't enjoy mean-spirited/intolerant conservative-bashing though, because I'm the only Democrat in a family of staunch Republicans, and I don't believe having conservative political beliefs makes you ignorant or uneducated. That being said, I have issues with certain conservative pundits who do some, shall we say, truth-stretching. Then again, I'm not fond of liberal truth-stretching either. Really, can Jon Stewart just be president?
I adore London. I got a chance to spend a week and a half there this summer and when I had to make my way back to Heathrow at the end, I cried nearly the entire way home. I still miss it dreadfully, and it's one of the few cities I've been to where I felt instantly at home. I'm hoping to go back again this summer for a bit. I'm currently deep into Peter Ackroyd's
London: The Biography just because. \0/
My other favourite city is Reykjavik, where I also went this summer (and learned how to say Eyjafjallajökull). If you ever, ever, ever have a chance to visit Iceland, go. It is utterly phenomenal.
I am (obviously) an Anglophile, despite the fact that both sides of family have been in the States since the early 1600s. However, other than my Melungeon great-grandfather's family line and a stray German who married into the tree back in the 1670s, we're entirely English (mostly Devon-Dorset-Wilts-Norfolk), which is a bit odd in this particular melting pot. (I love geneaology. It thrills my inner history geek. And fuels my Angolphilia, really.)
I'm Episcopalian and quite involved in my tiny, wonderful parish. Sometimes I talk about religion here, but I make certain to lj-cut and mark it, so no one gets surprised. :) I thought for a while about filtering it, but I grew up highly fundamentalist and spent most of my life hiding my sexuality--and I hated having to do that--so it bothers me if I'm open here with my sexuality but hiding my religion. It's all part and parcel of me, and I like that I can be a queer Christian.
Speaking of sexuality, I define myself as queer: specifically bisexual with very predominantly lesbian leanings. Pretty much all my significant relationships have been with women, but I perv over pretty boys too and don't entirely rule out relationships with men. For the most part, I like my girls to be boyish and my boys to be girlish--androgyny is for the win, in my book, although I make exceptions for Keira Knightley and Adrien Brody. Although I suppose one could argue that Adrien is a bit more girlish than the usual Hollywood heartthrob. Hm. I also cannot resist pointy, blond, floppy-haired boys. (Damn you, Draco Malfoy.)
My father died six years ago. I still miss him dreadfully. I often joke that it amuses me when people say they could never actually stand Snape in person, because, well, my father was in many, many ways Snape Incarnate. Even down to being a physics/comp sci prof. There's a reason why Snape will always and forever be incredibly dear to me.
I love push-up bras, much to my mother's chagrin. However, I also can't go out of the house without close to full makeup on because I'm terrified my mother will somehow find out. (
noeon mocks me ruthlessly for this. I would like to point out that she doesn't have a Southern mother. THEY KNOW THINGS.) I also get mocked at every con I attend because I won't leave the hotel room without putting my hair up in hot rollers. Again, I blame my mother for this.
My absolute, hands-down favourite band is the Old 97s, and my favourite musician is their lead singer Rhett Miller. They got me through my father's death. I will love them forever. I also adore Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Sigur Rós, and Miles Davis, among many (MANY) others.
I'm a fairly recent convert (two years now) to knitting, and I'm terribly addicted to spending ridiculous amounts of money on yarn.
Hm. I think that's a good overview…oh, wait, best quote ever?
God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of His own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players [i.e. everybody], to being involved in an obscure and complex variant of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a Dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time.
--Good Omens, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett
Whew. I think that pretty much sums me up. :D
