So. I went on a bit of a road trip to Baltimore this weekend. :D
It took no joke, over three hours for Dragon and I to get out of Massachusetts Friday night. Mainly because this was what we spent most of our time on the Mass Pike doing:
Please to be noting the giant 1. As in 1 mile per hour. Seriously, it was a good hour and a half before we went over 20 miles per hour. WE COULD HAVE GONE FASTER VIA HORSE AND BUGGY. However, we finally made it out, and during the course of the evening I drove through NYC for the first time in my life. \0/ It wasn't much worse than the 405 in LA, I have to say, and I drove that twice a day from Venice to Burbank and back when I lived in Cali.
We crashed at
djinnj's place Friday night and then we all drove down to Baltimore Saturday, passing along the way this awesome topless bar (with go-go dancers!). We liked the mermaid.
We were also highly amused that the Pennsylvania Turnpike calls itself the Penna Turnpike.
One must have the proper tunes for a road trip. A 168-song playlist of Rhett and the Old 97s is a good start. :D
YAY BALTIMORE! FINALLY!
How do you know you've neared the Mason-Dixon line? You actually see, you know, flowering trees in April. And it's not FRIGID still.
However, I couldn't be rid of those damn cobblestone streets. I swear, I used to like cobblestones and think they were quaint and charming. Until I had to walk on them everyday in the winter. *eyes cobblestones balefully*
So we found an Irish pub to eat at. And I happened to notice that the condiments were highly suggestive of certain HP characters. Meet Snape, Draco and Harry. (In that order.)
This of course lead to condiment threesome porn. Because, dude, what else is going to happen when you get three Dungeons authors together? The boys are enjoying a bit of a daisy chain here. Draco's very happy.
Snape came first, of course, and was a bit tired, so he just decided to sit back and watch Harry finish Draco off....
WHAT? Don't look at me like that. We did bemoan the fact that the Irish pub didn't have HP sauce. THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN AWESOME. Alas. :(
We finally got to Fletcher's--which was a few blocks away from our pub--about twenty minutes before the show. LOOK! RHETT!
This place is tiny. It's even smaller than the Middle East in Cambridge....here's what it looks like empty.
That's pretty much the whole club, you guys. The stage is only a bit smaller...OH HI, LOOK, YOU CAN SEE RHETT'S GUITAR.
The opening act blew me away. Which is kind of amazingly fantastic. I usually just suffer through opening acts because they're usually not that awesome, but the guy who played last night was fucking incredible. I ended up buying both of his CDs that he had on the merch table. His name was Justin Jones and he was snarky and funny and I totally fell for his music. To the point that if he comes up towards Boston, I will go see him in a heartbeat. He's just that good. I'll be pimping him later to you guys. :D Trust me.
And then Rhett came out.
Look at that hair! I love it when he gets into playing. He just doesn't stop moving. And he played such an incredible set--including songs that he NEVER plays. Like Oppenheimer and Book of Poems and Holy Cross and Hover and Indefinitely and...and...YOU GUYS IT WAS AWESOME.
He just has so much fun when he plays.
It cracks me up when he twists his hips while he plays. Boy's just adorable. And that which he is drinking below? Is a cup filled with a little ice and a lot of whisky.
Okay, seriously, that's really sort of hot.
But he needs refreshment after almost TWO HOURS STRAIGHT of doing this.
I think this may be my favourite picture so far. I love the way he almost looks like he's praying....
Look at how much sweat he puts off! This is right after his first encore--yes, he had two encores last night, and he looked like he was about to keel over when he came out for the second one, but he went on to do another three, four songs. I adore this man.
Afterwards,
ze_dragon,
djinnj and I hung out and waited to talk to him out at the merch table. I got another t-shirt signed (WOOT!) and we chatted with him a bit--he's started to recognize
djinnj, since she was a show of his earlier in the week. *G* He also said that he's working on a new album and it's going to be entirely comprised of slow, quiet songs this time because he's ready to try an album filled with that kind of music, which makes me go \0/. I love his quiet songs so much.
He also said the Old 97s are hitting the Northeast in July so YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY. I'd been so worried about that because they have no dates posted for their summer tour after June. They're looking into venues, and they may come to Boston, but he doesn't want to play at the Paradise because it's too small for them. He'd thought perhaps they'd book the Avalon, and I was like, er, no, you can't, they closed the Avalon. *G* So then he was like, well, where can we fit at least 1500-2000 people, and I was like, um...maybe the Roxy? I know they've done some mid-size acts there recently because they keep popping up on my Ticketmaster info. All the other rock clubs in Boston I frequent are way too small for 2000 people....
But yay for possible Old 97age in Boston!
We then turned around, and drove all the way back to
djinnj's house and slept a couple of hours before Dragon and I hopped back in the car and drove back up to Boston...in far less time than it took to drive down. Thank God. Still, I crashed as soon as I got home--after much petting of a slightly annoyed cat--and tomorrow, oh my God. I'm going to be so exhausted...I've spent about 20 of the past 48 hours in a car, driving halfway down the East Coast.
It was totally worth it though.
Totally.
Now....I have to go back to writing....with a lapful of needy, terribly neglected cat. :)
