HP fics you might (DO) want to read even if the pairings don't sound like your usual thing
So yesterday I was social and I plan to take a stab at it again tomorrow, but today I have been slothing about in my pajamas and reading HP fic. But unlike those unfortunate roads my OTP-ing has taken me down of late, I read some REALLY REALLY GOOD HP FIC. The kind that makes me feel "nourished" despite the fact that I'm bleery from looking at the computer screen and haven't eaten nearly enough. I am going to tell you about it.
+++such a beautiful blank (but smooth it) by Anonymous - Ginny/Harry, Ginny POV - NC17 - The premise of this story includes a blunder involving the Queen of Elves, time going wonky, and memory-loss due to elfin magic, and yet it is one of the more real-feeling (living, breathing, human) fanfics I've read in awhile. And it definitely hits my quotidian!details fic kink. The Ginny voice is great, sympathetic yet not idealized. There's a nuanced, believable representation of Ginny and Ron's sibling relationship and her kinda-sorta-not-at-all "outsider POV" on Harry makes him seem like an...almost-man person. The author's summary is: Ginny picks a rose, and her world spins out of control...This fic was very loosely inspired by the tale of Tam Lin, somewhat more inspired by the film Groundhog Day, and named for a line in Sylvia Plath's poem Amnesiac. And one more comment that has spoilers for the fic - The sex scene in this story is incredibly deftly done, with Ginny having memories of herself and Harry having been a couple for two years, but he doesn't remember any of that--for him it's the first time. And so there's this incredibly visceral combination of her familiarity and yet this omg-newness! 12,500 words.
+++Fire Call by Anonymous. Bill/Tonks, Bill/Tonks/Charlie - NC17 - This story takes place before OoTP and is not AU, but includes no mention of Remus or Fleur. What it is is an unusually solid piece of writing, with a list of kinks that would exhaust me to type out, but basically it's about a consensual D/s relationship. It is, in some ways, rather pedagogical (?) about the BDSM stuff but it works seamlessly because the reader learns along with characters in the fic (especially Tonks, and also Charlie). It's extremely hot, but also has the virtue of being psychologically complex and the sometimes rare for fanfic thing (and fair treatment) of including the negotiation of someone actually *using* their safe word. About 20,000 words.
+++Sexing the Pumpkin by ratherbrightred - Severus/Sirius - NC17 - Okay, so you know how I dressed up as Ron Weasley for Halloween? Well, my pal RBR also went in HP drag this year...as Snape. So naturally we got to talking about femme!Snape, but RBR being the brilliant girl that she is, went to an even more interesting place - tranny!Snape. This is a Snape who is gendered male but biologically female. The story has spoilers up through DH (though it primarily takes place during OoTP) and fits into canon by positing Snape as "living stealth." I'm not actually sure if I've ever read a "genderswap" fic that's actually a representation of trans-identity before. But anyway! The writing is incredibly clever, at points ridiculous, at others somewhat disgusting, and sometimes surprisingly poignant. I will warn for the inclusion of graphic sex that interrogates logistics, a variety of bodily fluids both sexual and non, the implication that Sirius has dog!sex while he's Padfoot and the rude bloke-ish places his boredom takes him while he's stuck in Number 12 (one of the less rude, but hilarious, things involves a theme of Sirius taking the quizes in women's magazines). Oh right and liberal smoking of Weasley-twin-provided marijuana. Ultimately what I'm saying is that even if you don't find the idea of tranny!Snape/Sirius Black slash particularly sexy, this is a very witty and thought-provoking story. Not sure of the word count, but it's three parts that each have their own lj-post. A quote:
The thought of someone looking at, let alone touching, those foreign objects on his chest, small and scrawny and uninteresting as they were, made him taste sweet, pot-hazy vomit at the back of his throat, as if his dinner wanted to resurface amidst his growing hunger for the out of character foods marijuana always urged him towards. This time, he was craving a most unlikely incorporation, stranger than chips and chocolate cake combined: Sirius Black, complete with crooked grin, unkempt facial hair, and the intensity of someone left alone and bored all day every day. He had very simple desires, like stroking Snape's lip with his thumb, and letting the hammock gently draw them closer, until they touched from ankle to shoulder. Well, these would have been simple desires were he anyone but who he was-a man who felt not very distant from the spindly deviant he'd been when he first set foot in Hogwarts decades ago. He knew that only someone equally queer could ever really understand him or possibly love him (though in truth he didn't hold out much hope for love). If Black's queerness was in question, his fucked-upness was strong and true. Maybe that would be enough.
eta: Do any of you "real" HP people know where ratherbrightred should post this? She's afraid to post it to Snape/Black slash comms because *technically* there are female parts in it and doesn't quite think it belongs on the "bottom!Snape" comm either. And I'm clueless and Trio-oriented.
P.S. I have decided that Charlie Weasley is extremely dishy. Also, many of the people who write Ron/Harry fic are entertainingly cracked. Also, wow, Harry is the only main character in any of these fics that I have an icon of.
