Huh... I clicked on the little "got something to say" link because I did, or at least I thought I did. And now all I can come up with is "yes." Is that a response? Can I just give your well-articulated thoughts a general statement of affirmation and be done with it? Well, yes.
Unless you were living under a rock today you already know that Joss posted today on Whedonesque well, it is nice under here ... totally didn't realise so thanks for pointing me at it ... although I am now thinking about potential non-Spuffy canon ... since most of my favourite fics tend to go AU anyway, I'm not too worried, but written by Joss himself ... hard to avoid ...
and I think you've probably got a point about some internet space can be gendered ... not quite sure where the lines lie, but as Buffy (or most specifically in my case, Spike) seems to attract a lot of women (and I'm one of them), so the online world I get involved with is very female populated ... which is the complete opposite of RL, where all my friends are men. I wonder if I got more involved in the Firefly/Serenity world, if it would be more male dominated ... the other possibility is - factual=male dominated, artistic=female dominated ... not to say there aren't some great male-created fics and graphics out there
You're welcome. :) Yeah, since we can always go AU, I'm not like tearing out my shipper girl hair or anything.
Fanfic fandom is predominantly female across the board but you're right, I have noticed that there seem to be more men in Firefly fandom (although I think they're still a minority). That probably has more to do with genre - Westerns being a "masculine" genre, etc.
factual=male dominated, artistic=female dominated ..A good point. But I see something else as well: women are socialized to value relationships. Also, the archetype of the (professional) "artist" in our culture is independent, unique. This real "artist" creates in a vacuum without being in conversation with the rest of the culture. Note, that this is a basic definition

I'm happy that Joss is still talking about the possibility of a Spike movie. Surprisingly, I'm not too bothered that there would almost definitely be no Spuffy in it. I just want to see some new Spike.
About canon: Once season 7 ended, I dove into fanfic -- after a lot of hesitation -- because I wanted more stories. Why the hesitation? I doubted the quality. Also, I lurve canon. I felt that if it wasn't canon, it wasn't worthy of my attention. Obviously, I've changed my mind about that

I didn't get into fanfic until well after the show was over even though I was totally obsessed with it. (Although I did write at least 5 Buffy-related essays in undergrad).
And then when I did start reading and writing fanfic at first it wasn't BtVS which is odd considering that Buffy will probably always be my favorite show ever. I think I was afraid of it because I love it so much...or something.
Canon is important to me in so far as I think that it should always have some kind of affect on fic. I can read AU if it's a) well done and b) really interprets or interacts with canon. So I almost NEVER read human AU but when I have it's when it gives the characters similar personality traits and replicates important dynamics. Basically I have to be able to see how the author extrapolated from canon. As long as it does, I'm all for AU. But crap, "AU" is such a vague, catch-all term at this point

Mostly, anyway. I've read some Veronica Mars, but I haven't really gotten into it. I don't have quite the same attachment to the characters as with Buffy. Maybe when the show's over...
And the only Firefly sort of fic I've read are herself_nyc's gorram-verse fics. And those have Spike, Buffy and Angel in them. :D
Big "yes" to all of your thoughts on canon and AU. I've read some human AU, but I really need the vampire element to be there. And I agree, it does need to work with canon in some meaningful way, or else I'm not especially interested.
But crap, "AU" is such a vague, catch-all term at this point. Also very true.
As for Whedonesque, I'm glad that you didn't think that I was dissing on it. Not at all. You made an interesting observation.
Friend away! I'm friending you back. Your icons are lovely. ::points up:: Yay! And thank you!
I kind of feel like being involved in fandom has really altered how I interact with TV in general.
Now, when something really strikes a chord with me, often my reaction will be to immediately write some kind of character study short fic about it.
Of course, I like a lot of shows that I don't get fannish about (currently the only ones I am actively fannish about are Buffy, Firefly and VM).

I can see that, since with more time we'll have a more developed relationship with the characters and also the possibility of getting "Rob-ed" is over.
I must say that I am enjoying being involved in an active fandom though as while Buffy was on the air, I was obsessive about it all alone. :(

Hopefully not for eating! Hee.
Yeah, I'll watch the Spike movie, no question.
