Stupid question for TV/Sound nerds

How do i hook up speakers to the digital audio output (optical) on my LCD TV

We have a plasma screen TV with pretty decent computer speakers hooked up to it. Seth just plugged them into the headphones jack (there is only one input cable) and they work all right. But I am sure he will see this post and write a more detailed response later because he knows about this kind of stuff.

There is a headphones jack on the TV, so I guess I'll take a peek and see what I can get in the way of speakers that might work that way.

I'll wait to see if Seth chimes in with any ideas before I go on a speaker shopping spree :)

It may be defective. I heard on NPR Friday AM that lots of people were having trouble with the converter equipment for the digital set-up. Hope you can get it working.
