Stupid question for TV/Sound nerds

How do i hook up speakers to the digital audio output (optical) on my LCD TV?

Anyone out there who's done this?

The only speakers I have came with my shelf system stereo/CD player. I can run a regular cable from the TV to the cable box and from the cable box to the stereo and the stereo speakers will work while I'm watching TV, but not if I'm watching a DVD (the dvd player is built into the tv). I want to have speakers hooked up directly to the digital audio output on the TV so I'll have speaker sound all the time (TV or DVD).

Is there a way to do this without spending shittons of money on some kind of home audio system receiver that has digital input?

I bought some stupid little converter thing, an optical digital cable and a monster cable and it was supposed to convert the digital output so I could just plug the digital cable into the digital output on the tv, run that into the converter, plug the monster cable into the converter and then into the stereo and the speakers would work if the stereo was on, but it does not work (I've tried using the game setting on the stereo with no luck - because the CD, Radio, or Tape setting obviously wouldn't work for this). I don't know if the converter is just stupid or if I am. I'm usually pretty good with this kind of stuff, but this has me baffled.

HELP!!!!
