A slew of my friends have been getting married lately. Which makes me feel weird because a) I'm not married, or engaged, b) or even in a long term relationship that could possibly turn into marriage, c) not ready for either of the two above mentioned items.
That's honestly besides the point.
It drives me nuts to hear the pastor/priest say to the bride "Who gives away this bride to be wedded?" In the year 2005 are we women still looked at as property? I know part of the phrase is traditional. Some women like traditional weddings with old-fashioned sayings.
After thinking, I realize when I do marry, I want my parents to be recognized as a major influence in my life, but not suggesting I am their "property." I came up with this instead:
"Who walks with the bride as she crosses over the threshold of one life into another?"
It acknowledges that I am my own person, but also that my parents have played a role in my life. It also says the marriage will be about equality, not dominance of male over female.
Thought I'd pass the idea along.
