Movie rec! Edie & Thea: A Very Long Engagement

Sep 24, 2009 22:36

I just got back from a Q&A showing of a wonderful, wonderful movie. Seriously, me and mom, we sat there, tears streaming down our faces. And not because it was sad, even if at parts it was, but because it was so beautiful and touching and just grabbed you by the heart and squeezed it. Hard.

It's a documentary, the love story of two women, Edie and Thea, and their life together. And how, after 41 year together they decided to go to Canada to get married.

I think it's safe to say there wasn't a dry eye in the room after it ended. There was a Q&A after with the makers: my cousin Greta and her partner Susan, and Edie herself. Which is a fantastic tiny eighty year old hard-of-hearing woman who swears and wears tight jeans and shiny pink shirts and talks about sex. A lot. (She sat in the row in front of us and I could hear her giggling during the funny and the naughty parts (talked about, not shown). And hitch her breath during the emotional ones. Thankfully, being hard of hearing she probably didn't hear me and mom bawling like babies. lol)

Thea got MS around the age of 45 and so a big part of their lives she spent in a wheelchair. She died in February, about a year and a half after they got married. Me and mom spoke with Edie after the movie and mom asked how she managed after Thea died. She said, "I didn't. I had three heart attacks. The doctor said my heart broke and it was true, it did. Literally. But then I decided that I couldn't go because I had a memorial to plan for Thea. And that's what I did." And the whole time she spoke she kept rubbing the ring on her finger, still so new and shiny. Dammit, now I'm crying again.

They'll be taking it to film festivals all over the world, both gay ones and regular and if you get a chance to see it I really, really recommend it. And I'm not just saying that because it was made by my cousin. They've had standing ovations at pretty much every viewing and have already gotten a few awards even if they only wrapped up the movie this June! It's just an amazing wonderful movie that everyone should see. You can follow the Facebook page for updates to see where it's going to be shown.
