I'm writing a Doors!timestamp scene with Jared listening to Jensen singing so I plugged in my headphones and listened to Jensen Ackles sing Angeles to be able to better describe his voice. And if I ever needed supporting evidence that RPS is as much fiction as any other fanfiction (not that I do) I got it there. Because Jensen Ackles sounds nothing ( Read more... )

Exactly this. I totally agree. Even though when I first started reading J2, I always looked for Non-au, to me it always had another small(au) next to it for me.
And I believe the AU part is the key. Everyday it feels like we get to discover another alternate universe that contains these two - who, no matter where, find each other - Goodness, we are so damn lucky. A big thank you to yourself and all the other wonderful authors out there.
My daughter asks why and how I can only read J2 - simply because of what you have said here. I was explaining this to her the other day. It's always fresh and new. :)

Also, another step into the Doors verse? Oh thank you. Will wait patiently. :)

I so have to agree with you, that it does not matter how many times you write a character (if it isn't in the same verse) they are a new one. I would say that even a little change, change the whole appearance. A new setting, a sickness, new experience and so on does change them. Put several together and you definitely will have someone else, even if you try to use some manners you know they have.

Yep keep writing, i'll do the same.

This is so true.

But then I think we are the same in real life. I relate to spouse differently than to child, or to high school friend, or co-worker, or the person on desk duty twice weekly at the library. All are me, but asked to describe me and the relationship, each description would differ. So all are different facets of me, from different perspectives.

So I think established characters like J2 can be different from verse to verse, given the circumstances and events that take place in each verse, and how the characters have reacted to that past before we meet them, also in how they're perceived by other characters in that verse--all those things change not only the character, but the readers' perception of that character.

So, effectively retaining a physicality, and possibly patterns of speech we recognize, from verse to verse, the character in each verse is different from the others.

And I meant to say, Doors verse?!? Yay!!

I have always thought of it as in RPF stories authors were writing new characters, but casting Jensen and Jared in the roles.
