The girl was supposed to be at the Xmas skate show today. We had all bundled up, dressed like we were going to the North Pole and brought blankets as well because it's so cold in there. We were running a bit late and the girl takes off through the building to the back entrance to the changing rooms even if I called out to her that all the girls were going the other way. (They've been doing lots of constructions and for a few weeks they had to go the back way because the other was closed.) She yelled back that she always went this way and "Stop nagging, mum, you're making me be even later." Of course when she got there the door was locked, probably because guests have to pay in for the show and they didn't want people sneaking in the back way. Anyway, instead of going back she tries to find another way out to the rink, goes up the stairs to the next floor, finds a door that she knows leads to an iron stair down and steps through.
There were no stairs.
She fell down to the floor below on the walkway beside the rink.
How the hell does this happen? How do you leave a door that leads into thin air UNLOCKED where there are lots of kids running around? WTF!?!
When I got there she was surrounded by shocked kids and parents, one of them thankfully a nurse. The girl was white with shock, crying. She couldn't put any weight on the foot she had landed on, it had buckled under her. She kept saying she needed to be okay because she was supposed to be in the show. Poor thing. Her dad carried her to the car and we took her to the ER.
Verdict? A twisted ankle, that was all.
I'm just... Jesus! She was so lucky. Never mind being lucky enough not to break her leg, she could have fallen on her back or her head if she'd tipped forward instead of falling straight down and who knows what would have happened then? *shudders*
Of course all she was worried about was missing the show. And her main concern now is how much ice cream and candy she can milk from this, not to mention extra big Xmas presents. lol. I guess it's just as well she doesn't realize how badly this could have gone.
Btw, we're calling the ice rink tomorrow [ETA. They just called us. They're making a report and trying to find out how it could have happened. Plus the other doors which were locked are an escape route in case of fire and so that's another bad mistake they made. Well, good to know they're taking it seriously.]
kids,
