I'm freelancing full-time now. I'm totally out of shape due to my lack of commute. Things are generally good. My girlfriend and i are jumping on the Pacific Northwest bandwagon, and moving to Portland this summer.

Powell's?
Yeah...the traffic here really does blow. And, quite frankly, though I'm partial to this town, I can see how, coming from a completely unrelated place, Portland might seem a superior option... I think it might be a tad more user-friendly. :)
Powell's is an independent book store in Portland (with a handful of locations, though i'd hesitate to call it a chain).
The keystone in the grand arch that is Powell's is Powell's City of Books, a used-and-new bookstore the size of a city block in downtown Portland. A couple blocks away lies Powell's Technical Books, which is hands-down the best technical bookstore i've encountered in my long wanderings.
If you enjoy bookstores, it may just be worth an Amtrak-fueled day trip.

The Chicago location is related by blood, but not business-wise. Seriously, Chicago Powell's was started by the brother of the guy who started Portland Powell's. They're different setups, though, with different vibes, and different websites.
That's the nutshell.

Why Portland? Seattle is much awesomer.

Mostly, we both visited it and loved it. We stopped into Seattle briefly for a wedding, but didn't get as good a vibe. And the traffic was abysmal.
Portland and Seattle are near enough for an overnight, though. Just sayin'.
