Name: Selina Kyle / Catwoman
Canon: DC comics
Series: Catwoman/Detective Comics/Various
Appearance:
Anne Hathaway,
Comics Based Costume. Personality:
Just who is Selina Kyle? That's the thing about Selina, you just never know...unless she wants you to. And cats are capricious with whom they keep company. Selina prefers anonymity. Growing up on the wrong side of the tracks after loosing everyone she ever loved, she had to do some unsavoury things to survive. Prideful and private, Selina is a work in progress, adapting to adversity. And Catwoman? Well, having to keep a secret identity is contingent upon keeping it a secret. That's one bit of information she'll keep hidden. Aside from a few friends and lovers, Selina and Catwoman are two different women moving in different worlds. And that suits them both fine. Because when those two worlds collide somebody almost always gets hurt - or worse.
She is a loner, a thief, a creature of the night and shadows. She is a cat - and she is a woman. But once, once she was a child.
Some people are born with everything. Loving parents, a warm atmosphere to prosper and grow. Selina Kyle wasn't lucky enough to be one of those people. Born to an alcoholic father and mother who simply couldn't cope, Selina was orphaned with her sister at a young age. She leaned to live life the only way she knew, on the edge, taking risks and never giving in. Selina's upbringing played a huge role in forming her personality. She was raised in poverty and in an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. From the first she was made to feel guilty and inferior, primarily by her father who's anger control issues were overwhelming him due to his addiction. Seeing both of her parents die would surely have torn apart a weaker person. But somehow these bitter experiences made Selina stronger and more determined to escape destitution and misery.
Selina Kyle was never destined to be normal. She was predisposed to be entirely remarkable. Even as a young girl growing up she excelled at things that a thirteen year old girl shouldn't even be thinking about. Fighting, stealing, blackmail. In some ways she was made overconfident by her remarkable ability to get whatever she wanted from a young age. Not by being cute, by taking it, taking it because no one would ever just give her anything, it was never that easy. But along with the talent came a strange sense of justice. Selina couldn't bare to see anyone mistreated or pushed down like she had been. She beat on bullies and was thrown out of her Juvenile hall by the warden when she discovered he was fiddling the books. Left to drown in a sack, that's when the Catwoman emerged. The will to survive, the need to be the best.
Her hard life inspired her to help others, and most importantly, help herself.
Selina's life after the escape was just as tough. She spent her days training as a pick pocket but soon graduated into the ranks of the street walkers that haunted Gotham City at night. Instead of letting it overcome her she used her place among the girls to keep an eye on how they were treated providing a friendly face and support system for the younger ones. But after seeing Batman take to the night she was inspired to take her life into her own hands once more and left the grime behind, pledging to better herself by whatever means.
Selina's lack of anything is the main reason for her criminality. She takes what he wants and doesn't think about the repercussions. The way she sees it, the people she takes from have everything, she has nothing. It's only fair.
Sarcastic and harsh by nature she's never one to back away from a good battle of wits, Selina detests being outsmarted. She's likely to be horribly abrasive to most people she meets but can soften on further friendship. She's naturally untrusting and doesn't like to get close to people unless she can depend on them, or if they depend on her. Her barriers have been built up so far that she's a tough cookie to crack. If you want her friendship you really have to work on it.
Emotionally, Selina demands more than she gives. Cool, calm and collected to the outside world she doesn't betray much. She has a distinct venerability that she tries to hide from those around her fearing in some ways that they make think less of her because of her softness in some situations. Selina has always had to be hard, she doesn't see a reason to stop. Thanks to the riches she's stolen in the past and some wise investments she doesn't rely on anyone for anything any more, her independence is very important. Selina rarely betrays herself when it comes to love, she's only really been in love with one person but can't really admit it to herself. Love is something for normal people, not for those who scour the rooftops of Gotham at night looking for trouble. She doesn't have the time or the patience to belong to another and she certainly couldn't commit to anyone. She's learnt to avoid relationships, although she finds practising this harder than she thought it would be. She tends to think of the city as her one true love - it helps.
When it comes to truth and justice, things are just as complicated. Selina exists entirely in a world of greys. She hates to kill, but has killed in the past and sees no problem with stealing vast amounts from the wealthy - But she often gives away her takings to Gotham's poorest, protecting those on the street and placing them above her own greed.
As much as Batman tries to convince her she is a good person, and she often shows herself to be so, she bucks against it, unwilling to fight her nature and determined to be the Yin to his Yang. On the other hand she has helped The Bat several times in his endeavours and rarely agrees to work with any of Gotham's villains preferring to work alone. It's hard to ignore that he's a massive influence in her life, as much as she'd hate to admit it. He counters her at every turn, but honestly? - She wouldn't have it any other way. What's a little fun without a few twists and turns?
Ultimately Selina belongs to Gotham, she loves the city, how it feels how it smells, how she feels when she's running the rooftops. Stealing or saving, Gotham never lets her down always providing the perfect opportunity. She's complicated, independent and strong willed. The perfect thief and the imperfect woman.
Powers/Abilities:
Catwoman is an accomplished athlete with heightened acrobatic prowess sometimes likened to that of a 'superhuman.' Although she has no powers to speak of she is considered a dangerous foe to many and should be avoided in hand to hand combat.
She was trained by the armless master of Gotham in Martial arts and uses a mix of these to suit her own abilities and maximise her own skills, she also has training in street fighting and boxing. Her formidable hand-to-hand combat skills are augmented by her cat-like speed, reflexes, balance, and flexibility. Selina has also mastered Dragon style kung fu and Karate. Her skills are good enough to that she has fought off much stronger foes and done considerable damage.
As a cat burglar her stealth is unsurpassed. She is the master of both low tech and high tech heists.
Catwoman has an 'anything you can do, I can do better,' stance on her abilities and hates being outdone by the numerous 'heroes' of Gotham, or anyone for that matter. She pushes herself to excel at everything she does, determined to be better, faster and stronger and to pull off the perfect crime.
As Selina, she may seem to be a vapid socialite to some, but she's conniving and deceitful, thinking of her social skills are part of the heist itself. She's beautiful and she knows it, using her looks as leverage in certain situations. You'll never find a better hostess or a more charming dinner party guest, but it's all part of the act. You'll be handing her a glass of champagne but she'll have already cased your vault.

The first thing Selina noticed was that her nose was bleeding.
She couldn't see it but she could certainly feel it, the warm trickle, the sharp metallic taste in her mouth. She licked her lip, slowly taking a breath, the feel of the blood dripping down and rolling off her cheek made her feel sick. Beneath her the ground didn't feel entirely sold like concrete, no, it was more like dirt. As her fingers reached out, fumbling for stability she felt it between her fingers. Her eyes fluttering open, adjusting to the sudden bright light, Selina looked out at the dark clouds hanging in the sky.
The pain was gone. The sharp pain, the fierce burning sensation which had filled her body had subsided, but she felt bruised, tender, like she'd fallen from a great height. Around her she could sense movement, people scurrying about. Selina rolled slightly pushing herself up until she was laying on her back, her chest rising and falling deeply. She shuddered slightly, her whole body convulsing. This wouldn't do, she had to look, she had to get up. Her body ached all over as she moved, slowly trying to to get it to co-operate she groaned, a loud sigh escaping from her mouth.
Straining, Selina almost sprang upright, alert she viewed the scene. She was expecting chaos, but it looked reasonably normal. It was drizzling and cold.
She squinted, sitting up and looking around, holding a hand up to shield her eyes. Sitting upright that quickly had made her feel a little queezy and she lurched forward. The breeze was blowing against her skin and it was only then, when she felt her flesh raise at it's touch, that she realised why she felt so cold. The black gown she'd been wearing for the benefit was torn and tattered, clinging to her body. Whatever had just happened had not only beat her up, it had beat the Prada up too...
Great. Just great.
One thousand two hundred dollars worth of designer dress was now ruined beyond repair and on top of that she didn't even know where she was any more.
It certainly wasn't Gotham though.
