It was quarter to twelve and people were starting to form groups on the dance floor. Selina watched carefully from the side lines. She'd never been one to dance in a crowd and sing Auld Langs Syne. And she'd certainly never be caught dead in a 'Happy New Year!' hat. The annual Wayne Foundation new year party was something of a necessity for anyone who was anyone in Gotham and she wouldn't have missed it for anything, not even the prospect of a silly hat. No, she was here to show face and shake hands. Here because that was what was expected of her and nothing less. She was known now, and part of her hated it.
She turned away from the hoards and looked out across Gotham. It was snowing outside and the white haze made the view almost beautiful. It made a difference from the rain anyway. Taking one last look behind her Selina opened a glass door and stepped out into the cold night air. The midnight blue gown she was wearing wasn't exactly suitable for the weather but she didn't often feel the cold and the night air filled her lungs. Breathing deeply she walked across the balcony area. It was vast and the tropical plants which were decorating it were now covered in a layer of ice, the blue fairy lights which covered them flashing intermitantly. The city around her seemed still and quiet, Gotham was waiting to welcome in a new year and everyone was prepairing to celebrate a new beginning. She could have laughed
Selina reached the edge of the balcony peering over the side down into the darkness. So quiet, so strange. The only thing disturbing it was the odd clink and the chatter from inside. She folded her arms and stared out.
"Not enjoying the party Ms Kyle?"
Selina didn't move. The voice resonated in her mind. She smiled a soft half smile looking out over the cityscape.
"Not particularly. I was waiting for someone but they didn't show.' She replied.
"Thats a shame," came the reply.
Selina felt a hand on her bare shoulder, but it wasn't flesh, it was rough. The fabric feel made her shift, turning on her heel to face him. The snow was landing on the black kevlar suit slowly and he stood stoic and statue like, as always. His eyes glinted through the darkness.
"You always show up just in time Bruce." She spoke slowly, quietly looking up at The Bat.
"On the dot," he replied wrapping an arm around her waist, pulling her too him.
A chime rang out over Gotham.
Midnight. Fireworks and explosions. Their lips met as a cheer went up from the main room. People embracing, congratulating each other. Awkward gestures and kisses. He pulled her closer, and she melted into the warmth his arms provided.
Another year, another twelve months of misery and pain. But what the hell, she thought.
At least we can start it with a bang.
