When I got home from the LoC today (a progress report on Still Life will come later), there was a mysterious package from
izhilzha waiting in my mailbox. I opened it up and was surprised and delighted to find . . .
. . . a wool scarf of the MacFarlane clan tartan!
Prior to her recent journey to Scotland, I asked Izhi to keep an eye out for anything with the MacFarlane tartan. I've got some Scotch-Irish McFarland blood, you see, and the McFarlands originated with the MacFarlanes. There's even a bit of history included with the scarf.
The tartan itself is a red, green, and blue plaid, with black and a bit of white woven in.
The crest is described as a demi-savage brandishing a sword and pointing to a crown. When Izhi described it to me, it did sound familiar. I believe I've seen it before among the family research.
There is a list of sept names given, but I'm not sure what that means. *checks on-line sources* Hm . . . it would appear a sept is a division of the clan.
The clan motto is "This I'll defend." Again, I knew this, but I'd forgotten.
The brief clan history reads thusly: Of Celtic descent, the clan's homeland for centuries was at the heads of Loch Long and Loch Lomond. Stalwart in its support for the great warrior king Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Independence, the clan was also notorious for raiding the cattle of its neighbouring clans at dead of night, to the extent that the full moon in the locality was known as "MacFarlane's Lantern."
Interesting . . .
