I had planned to post this last week, to work through some depression and all. Then
girlyghoul70 sent me that
hilarious piccie. And I had a very good weekend. So I'm feeling much better (though still very sleepy from my current meds).
But I want to share what's up, because now that we've had the season finale, which for all intents and purposes was the end of the five-year arc, it would seem I'm approaching the summer a bit differently.
Times They Are A'Changin'
(With apologies to Bob Dylan)
Come writers, directors,
And fandom and all,
And talk about stories,
The best you recall.
For Sam and Dean Winchester
Just saved us all
From a fate that's worse than dyin',
Though it left most of us cryin',
And the times, they are a'changin'.
It would seem I have no interest in reading "Swan Song" tags. I've read about five of them, all good (two of them, imo, excellent), and I've written one, but I've discovered that I don't really want fandom's input into my notions of what might happen next season. I want to wait and see what Gamble & Co. come up with. And I want to wait and see how the Js play whatever tension or character developments might be in store. I know how I'd like the season to start. And I've got a scene floating around in my head that might or might not make it to (virtual) paper. But I'm not ravenous for fic the way I was between S3 & S4.
I'm still interested in in-time line fic and case fic. So I'm hoping summer_gen will bring the juicy when it comes to that.
Neither am I, at this point, overly interested in meta. But I've got a couple essay ideas bouncing around in my head that might be of interest. (The primary one deals with mytharc vs. character arc, and show's handling of each.)
I also purchased The Unholy Cause, the latest SPN tie-in novel, and the first one I'll be reading. (I'll be honest. I'm a purist. If it's not in the show, it "doesn't count." Haven't read the Origins comics, or John's Journal, or any tie-ins, etc.) I'll tell you what. After the first chapter? I wanted to see Show's title card flash across the screen. Two chapters in, and it promises to be a "coulda been an ep" story. This makes me very happy. (Also,
kalquessa? If you're reading this, heads up. You need to check this book out. It's about Civil War reenactment in Georgia.)
ETA: I take it back. I did have one tie-in book previously, the Monsters, Demons, and whatever one. The reference book. Thought it might be an interesting source for monsters for fic. [/ETA]
I did mention to Geo though that it would be hilarious if they used the artist's concept renderings from Show's "Supernatural" book for the covers of the tie-ins. Bwah!
I'm also very interested in what's up with Show and ComicCon. Who's going this year? Are they even going to have a panel? ComicCon is usually after production has started back up, so sneak peeks (which I never watch, but still . . .)
Last summer, I did something of a re-cap project here in my LJ. I re-watched the entire series to date and wrote brief squees of what I liked about (most of) the eps. Don't know if I'll be writing such things this summer, but I might toss out a few games to play, if anyone wants to play along.
In the meantime, Geo and I have started watching the latest Dr. Who series, and I'm thinking about getting reacquainted with old favorites such as NX and N3.
Also, if anyone new to my journal wants to check out the recaps I did for Still Life two summers ago (TWO SUMMERS AGO!!! How can that be?), they're in a sticky at the top of my LJ.
We've got plans to go to NC for a week with the whole fam, both sides. House on the beach. I cannot wait.
There's also a very good chance we'll get to go back to Ohio for the July 4th family festivities and fireworks (I've had to work the past 2 years). And Geo's 30th class reunion is at the end of July.
Also got some drama things in the works, mostly for church, but also for the theater group we're trying to get started here in Culpeper.
And just FYI, algio e olio is fast becoming one of my favorite Italian dishes.
And finally, I think . . . I've been thinking about f-locking my journal, at least the personal stuff. Haven't decided for certain, because I know I have family members who read it, so f-locking would mean they can't read the stuff they're actually interested in. But it's something I've been contemplating. If you're interested in reading the non-fandom stuff, give me a heads-up in the comments. If I do go partial f-locked, I'll include you (and friend you, if I haven't already, so that I can, you know, include you).
Happy hiatus, all!
Now Dean has a home
And a son and a wife,
But he'll miss his dear brother
For the rest of his life.
But Sam, he's returned
To fight the good fight
And he wants Dean to fight at his side
'Cause he knows there's no place to hide.
And the times, are they really changin'?
