so after my rather angsty day yesterday where everything seemed to stall, i decided that some calming music was needed, so i turned to Bon Iver. You have to give it to this guy (his real name is Justin Vernon). After the break up of his band, a break up with a girlfriend and an illness, he decides to move to Wisconsin and spent 3 months in a cabin in the woods. In the middle of freaking winter! And it was here in the cabin with a few microphones, a guitar, and some recording instruments, that he wrote and recorded the material for his first album, For Emma, Forever Ago. One of the songs, Skinny Love i posted a few weeks ago. Music from this album has been used in Gray's Anatomy as well as House.
He's since released an EP called Blood Bank with 5 songs in it. The song Blood Bank has been described as coldplay-esque. So if you like coldplay- i suggest you check it out. The song that really got me is Woods. The lyrics aren't great but and the tune isn't something that sticks around for long. Its hook for me is the feeling, sense or even atmosphere he creates with the song and the use of the auto-tune, a device that has been used mostly with hip-hop/ dance music. Kanye West's new album uses it quite a bit. The mesh of that slightly metallic sound with a gently, folk song to create this strange sound is what has me listening to this track on repeat.
