First, Happy Birthday to Channing. He turns 36 today. I just realize his Chinese Zodiac Sign is Monkey. It suits him. Here is a Japanese fan's art for his birthday (
source). I want to collect all the dolls.
Here are three of my favorite characters played by Channing.
The main topic of this post is about Huck. I finally read all the 6 issues of Mark Millar (author) and Rafael Albuquerque (illustrator)'s Huck Vol. 1. It's a short story, only 130-140 pages. Millar recently said they planned a total of three books of Huck and they will start to work on Vol. 2 around Christmas time this year.
Here are some basic information about Huck.
(1) The most unique thing about Huck is the two leads are a mother and son duo. The mother also has superpower, and she and her son Huck fight baddies together. I think this should be the selling point of the movie adaption. How many times have you seen a female superhero in her 50s on big screen?
(2) Huck is a big guy with a heart of gold, just like Channing in real life. He lives in a small town in Maine, USA, and has a dog called Mickey. Huck has super strength. He does one good thing a day for people in his town. His superpower was exposed to the media by a female reporter Diane Davis, then trouble finds Huck. Although Channing is not a blond like Huck in the book, we have already seen Channing as a blond in Hail Caesar! and he looked FINE. But I feel Channing is too good-looking for Huck. Judge it yourself. Some think Channing needs to bulk up to play Huck, but I prefer him looking more like Magic Mike than Mark Schultz from Foxcatcher.
(3) Huck's mother is Russian. We don't know Huck's father, we only know his mother has superpower too. The Russians made experiments on her in order to produce super-soldiers, then she escaped while being pregnant.
(4) Huck was born in 1981 (Channing was born in 1980). Since he was abandoned, and was raised in the US, so he does not need a Russian accent.
(5) The most heartbreaking part about Huck is that mean people making fun of him because he is slow. I think Channing can play this part really well because he struggled with ADHD and dyslexia in school. Anyway, we learned that when her mother was forced to leave infant Huck outside an orphanage in the US, she left a note saying "Please love him". When Huck misses her or feels down, he often takes out the note and read it. If you have watched Dear John, you know Channing can pull it off.
(6) Mark Millar is a self-promoter. He said he wanted Rihanna to play the girl that Huck has a crush on. The thing is: in the first book, the girl Zoe only appeared for like five or six pages. We know she is a black girl, she is a single mom, she works in a flower shop, and Huck likes her. In the book, she only spoke with Huck for like two or three sentences. Even the female reporter Diane Davis who exposed Huck to the media has more scenes than Zoe. Millar wanting Rihanna as Zoe is a public stunt to me. Unless they expand Zoe's role, the role is just a glorious cameo.
(7) Near the end of the book, after Huck and his mother defeated the baddies, he asked her mother "So what now?". Does it sound familiar?
Anyway, we only know that Studio 8 has picked up this book for movie adaption last October. In January, Millar wrote on his own web site that the movie "is attracting insane talent". I believe he has approached Channing about it, but now it is still in early stage. We don't know if Channing wants to do it. If it is not for Channing, I probably will not be interested in this project. Volume 1 of the book does not have enough material to make a great movie, but there is a potential. However, it might be better than some of Channing's own project, for example that Evel Knievel project. I personally don't trust Channing's right-hand man Reid Carolin's writing ability (see scripts of the two Magic Mike movies).
