MMXXL box office and what it means to Channing's career

A few weeks ago, nimue_8 asked me :"Do you think people will still be there, or was their curisoty satisfied with the first film?" The answer is No, people are less interested in MMXXL.

MMXXL only made about 27.1M in its first five days, and the original movie made 39.1M in first three days. Luckily this movie only costs 14M to make, so eventually they will make a sizeble profit. One thing that gets my attention is the audience is 96% women. So they probably failed to bring in gay men.

I think we all understand star powers go up and down (e.g. Johnny Depp). To be on top, stars need to prove they are able to draw an audience. What is worrisome is MMXXL is supposed to be Channing's money maker, but it does not quite reach the expectation (or the success of the first movie is just an anormaly?) We can rightfully blame the Wachowskis for the financial failure of Jupiter Ascending, but MMXXL is Channing's baby. So the studios will cast doubt on his ability to bring people to the theatre. Channing needs a solid hit other than the Jump Street movies.

I and my friend rvchel2012 had a discussion about this. You see, when Brad Pitt first started, women adored him, but guys were not impressed. Then he did Fight Club. I think male audience started to accept him since then. Today, when you search "Brad Pitt" tag on Tumblr, you will see something related to Fight Club in the first few pages. This says a lot.

So Channing needs his Fight Club to change male audience's opinions about him. The Jump Street movies warmed up men a bit, but since they are comedies, so guys probably don't think those movies are cool. Anyway, Channing really cannot screw up Gambit, otherwise he will have a hard time to resurge again. Let's hope the movie will turn out to be okay.
