It only gets worse around here

The other day I was freezing here in the apartment, worried about the fact that I had a project due, and Comcast, as it's so prone to do, had cut the internet out on me right when I needed it most. So I sat down to listen to some music. I opened my external hard-drive from the desktop only to find my files A-G and nothing else. The rest had been removed from it, a loss of about 22 GB of music. Right as this was sinking in, the power cut out. This is a true story.

Turns out the space heater I'd bought had blown a fuse in my 1950's-built apartment. Three consecutive trips to Lowe's and I had the proper equipment to fix the problem. Sam came in, plugged in the space heater because he was cold, and blew the fuse again. Once we got the power up (the next day), I started my computer to see if I could pin down the problem with my missing music. I ran Chkdsk and managed to recover all of my files. The next day I came home, cranked the space heater, and smelled burning plastic. I looked around the room, no problems I could see. The day after I smelled it stronger, throughout the apartment. I checked around, got stoned and forgot about it. Yesterday my internet crapped out again and I noticed this time it was due to my router coming unplugged. The extension cord I had it plugged into seemed pretty off-and-on, so I traced it back to the power strip and saw what the burning plastic smell had come from. The older extension cord couldn't handle pumping power from my space heater and router all at once and all day long, and had melted INTO my power strip. I can't believe I didn't burn the place down.

I came home today and Sam had turned my power strip back on and I once again smelled burning plastic...

It just never ends. I think it can't get worse, and it does. It just does, somehow. They came to turn the gas back on today and 4 hours later I'm sitting in comfortable room atmosphere again. For the moment my bills are paid, my studies are complete, and my apartment is inhabitable. I feel like I'm just enjoying the calm before the storm. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches make awesome breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Moving into this apartment was an experiment in my own financial independence. I think I'm failing miserably.
