It sounds as though he actually does need those drugs to keep him still and from hurting himself!!

Well it works like this... everything you do as an individual is 'normal'. Therefore if you spend your life both smoking and selling drugs it becomes perfectly natural to assume that everyone has the same view on drugs as you do. To the extent that you can really, really, really fail the basic reality test of not pointing out your drug use/business to the police ( ... )

I can forsee situations in which you are so angry at being ripped off, you report 'the crime' of drug theft and suffer the consequences. Under no circumstances can I understand why you would admit to selling? He deserves prison for stupidity. 'Honestly, we're locking him for his own good'.
