Yesterday was the last round of matches in the dodgeball league. We were in second place, but due to play the undefeated Dazzlers. The teams in third and fourth were playing each other. If we lost, the winner of that match would almost certainly leapfrog over us into the first place final. A draw between them would probably leave us safe, as would a draw between ourselves and the Dazzlers. But draws are rare and bonus points might affect these results, so the only way to be sure of the final would be to win. Our destiny was in our own hands. Triumph or disaster - no middle ground. Did I mention that the Dazzlers were undefeated in nine straight games this season?
We started out on the attack, and took the first game. Then we were perhaps too aggressive in the second, turning a probable 2-2 draw into a 3-1 loss in the dying seconds. We rallied in the third, though, and by the end of the fifth we had the game in the bag. We rested star dodger Garry for the next game, but Joel picked up his mantle and fought back from a losing position to seize that one too.
So
we will be playing for the championship when the finals take place on 10th April.
After a fun, hectic warm-down session of close-up five-a-side dodgeball on a half-sized court we went to the pub for a deserved couple of beers.
