Went to see Simon and Rob's band Tinyfish on Saturday. Ventured across frozen London with snowshoes and sled dogs to the Peel. Envied WW and Bryony, who live ten minutes away from the venue.
Picked up one of their new "curious thing" gig T shirts, possibly because it was another layer to wear on the trek home.
Support was from the talented and worthy Sine Star Project. Who seemed to have Che Guevara on drums, and played the kind of thing my dad used, unfairly, to call "musician's music". Fishies' drummer Leon pointed out that the track Sine Star invited people to dance to had been in 19/16 time. But they were good, and after opening with a couple of perhaps weaker tracks they played some good stuff. Interesting use of pedal steel, I thought.
Tinyfish themselves had a technical glitch with Simon's guitar synth on their first song - I remember last time I saw them there was a technical problem on the first track too. Maybe I'm a jinx. They soon started to set the stage alight (metaphorically), with banter between Simon and Leon, the usual high standard of musicianship from Paul and Jim, and well-received spoken-word contributions from Rob. Sadly, Rob was out of the room at the moment Simon dedicated the new song 'Ride' to him. Old and new songs alike were played well and well-received by the audience. The full-on prog-sized epic on insomnia, Wide Awake at Midnight, came in at 10'31".
Gig ended too late to catch the last train, but Simon and his wife kindly gave me a lift back as far as Streatham, from where I quickly caught a night bus home. Waiting for the band to pack up, I was reminded how much hard work goes into live performance.
