Went to one of the eLearning Breakfasts at work today. Included a visit to the Interaction Lab where they study accessibility and human-computer interface. The coolest thing by a long way was the
eye-tracker they demonstrated, which makes it possible to study exactly where test subjects are looking as they use their computers. Lots of potential for gathering data to improve screen layout, hardware usability and so forth.
It tracks pupil dilation as well as eye movement, and apparently some researchers in other institutions have been using it in conjunction with heart and temperature monitors to measure subjects' emotional responses to stimuli. When I heard this, it really was all I could do to resist shouting; "but that's a
Voigt-Kampff machine!".
