Carrie Brown / Steve Earle and the Del McCoury Band. Great bluegrass murder song. I used to sing this as a lullaby to my older nephew when he was a little baby. I love that moment when Steve sings "...and he died in Tennessee!" and that bad-ass banjo riff kicks in...
Chain gang / Sam Cooke. "Poor Sam....". This song has real soul. And a kicker of a hook - "Hooh! Ah! Well don'cha know...". Inspired by Cooke seeing a real chain gang at work. He rushed to buy cigarettes for the poor sods working in the sun, apparently. Admittedly, forced labour and lung cancer ain't that great a combination, but his heart was in the right place.
Carnival / The Cardigans. Glacial Nordic pop at its best.
Cracking / Suzanne Vega. Opening track from her first album, which I played to death back in my undergraduate days.
Changes / David Bowie. Opening track from my favourite Bowie album.
The Chain / Fleetwood Mac. Because the instrumental break in this song is Formula One Grand Prix motor racing for my generation.
Children of the revolution / T Rex. Brilliant intro. A reminder that glam rock could actually rock.
Copperhead Road / Steve Earle. I am allowed two Steve Earle tracks, right? Especially when one of them's as mighty a song as this.
California dreaming / Mamas and Papas. Because of
Chungking Express. And because it's a great song.
Central reservation / Beth Orton. Reminds me of Summer 1999. It was a good Summer. But Autumn was cold.
