Put the Christmas trees up at home and at work. We put a bag of chocolate money on the one at work, and, just to keep the students honest, we tagged it so if anyone tries to walk off with it it'll set off the book-protection alarms.
Good night at the pub quiz on Thursday. Robert has got the job with Three ("three what?" you ask), which was ground for celebration, and then we won the first half triumphantly and somehow took the top prize in the second - we had to identify a country from its head of state and latitude and longitude. The geography dudes on the team got them all. Faint, stunned, grudging applause from our rivals greeted our succcess.
Met Marie and Charmaine for drinks at Penderel's after work last night. We're into office party period, and the place was crawling with amateur drinkers and boozed up braying yahoos. Took forever to get served - bar staff not the most clued up.
Marie and her family are off on a pre-Christmas holiday to Portugal today, so she won't be around for my birthday do next week. Shame. Talking about what we'd been up to recently, I told her about Dragonmeet and the Ars Magica game. To my surprise, she asked if she can come along and take part when I next do some roleplaying! Well, she did score quite high on the
Geek Test...
Charmaine had some bad news. She had a hospital appointment yesterday, and they've told her she needs a major operation soon, followed by six weeks' radiotherapy. She insisted that they wait till after Christmas so she can enjoy the holiday with her family. She was glad to have someone to talk and drink with, and I did my best to be supportive and to cheer her up, but there's not really much you can do to help in this sort of situation. It's so unfair, really - after her operation two years ago, they were sure she'd be OK, but now she's got it all to go through again and this time she knows it's more serious. I've worked with her for two years now, and she's a good oppo and a good friend. Looks like I'll be visiting
Guy's in the New Year, then.
