My wife and I are getting her aunt an iPad mini for Christmas. For various reasons of us being in Florida and a bit lazy, we didn’t try and buy it until after Christmas as we knew we wouldn’t see them before that.
But, the day after Christmas, all sold out of the one we wanted to get her, and I was unwilling to pay a few hundred more to get the higher end one.
So, we ordered it.
They said that placing the order on December 26th, we should get it January 8th, and that is with rush shipping.
But, I guess the found one in Shanghai, stuffed it in a box and it was on its way to us as of last Thursday. By yesterday it had reached the delivery center 5 miles from here.
Today, they tried to drop it off, but I was at work and my wife in the shower.
So, I called them.
“Can I come by the office and get it?” I asked.
“Sure, the driver will be back at 7PM, and we’re open until 7:30.”
So, at 7:10 I walked in and asked for my package.
“The driver isn’t back yet,” I was told. “Have a seat, he should be here soon.”
The counter person went to the back room. I heard a conversation consisting of a lot of “he should have been back now” “when will he get back?” “well, where is he?” and such.
They returned to me.
“We close at 7:30 and he may not be back by then,” he told me.
“But, he is coming back tonight, right?”
“Well, yes, but we don’t know when.”
“But, he is scheduled to be back by now, so it is a FedEx thing that he’s late, right?”
“Well, yes, but we’re going to close and lock the doors at 7:30.”
“If I don’t get my package tonight, I won’t be able to give my aunt her present before she returns to Florida,” I said. “Is there any way I can get it tonight?”
He returned to the back room. A conversation ensued about delivery times, meeting schedules and customer service.
“If you’re willing to wait, we’ll make sure you get your package.” I was told.
At 7:30 they locked the doors and pulled the curtains so “no one can see a customer still inside”. The building is at the end of an office park at 7:30 at night New Years Eve. Who do they think will be looking in the windows?
About 10 minutes later two FedEx folks came running out.
“Your package is here! Your package is here!” they shouted.
So, it all worked out. Now my wife’s aunt can have her present before going back to Florida and we can show her how to use it.
Win for all.
